At the age of 18, Danarto joined as a member of Sanggarbambu in Yogyakarta.
Sanggarbambu was founded by Sunarto Pr. on April 1, 1959. The first members of Sanggarbambu were Moeljadi W, Wardojo, Suharto Pr., Soemadji. In the same year, Handogo S, Danarto, Arif Sudarsono joined it.
This book presents a reflection on 40 years of Sanggarbambu's journey (1959 - 1999), written by Sanggarbambu exponents and a number of people who have been involved with Sanggarbambu activities. In the midst of the tense social and political conditions in Indonesia in the late 1950s - 1960s, Sanggarbambu declared itself as an independent and non-political studio. Their stance is pledged as "individual as well as nation" on the basis of Pancasila (The Indonesian national principle). Also different from other art studios—which mushroomed in Indonesia during that period—which only focused on one art discipline (for example, painting studios, theater studios, sculpture studios, etc.), Sanggarbambu accommodated a variety of activities ranging from fine arts, theater, music, movies, etcational principle). Throughout the 1960s, they toured 30 cities on the islands of Java and Madura, with the main activities are art exhibitions, lectures, workshops and theater performances. Sanggarbambu was also involved in a number of theatrical productions, films and music concerts, making statues of heroes such as General Ahmad Yani and Gatot Subroto.
This book contains one of Danarto's paintings, "Dari Pasar", 1962, which is in the collection of the National Gallery of Indonesia. Also a typography by Danarto for the poster for "Oedipus Rex" theater performance directed by WS. Rendra. In Mulyadi W's notes, it is stated that Danarto made a surprise in the field of literature and the "Pameran Putih di atas Putih" (White on White Exhibition) with his white canvas which was held at TIM Jakarta, long before there was the electrifying New Art movement. He also exhibited installation art using terracotta pipes which were usually used by masons to make septic-tank drains and hang dry plaster, long before the installation art took off in later years."
Another trivia, Sanggarbambu made a statue of Dewi Sri for (Osaka) Expo'70.
In 1964, the studio separated into two parts: Sanggar Bambu '59 & Sanggar Bambu; 'Karya Putih' ('White Works') exhibited at Pameran Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia (Indonesia New Art Exhibition), TIM, 9-20 October.
